Cats in Ancient Egypt

For the love of Cats... a short history. This 14 slide presentation explores the history of the relationship between cats (domestic and wild) and the Ancient Egyptians.

  • Cats have been beloved pets of humans for over five thousand years.
  • The Ancient Egyptians are credited with being the first civilization to domesticate cats and make them an esteemed part of their households.
  • The relationship probably arose as one of mutual benefit as the Egyptians harvested grain and needed vermin to be kept away from it and the cats sought a ready source of food. Companionship for both species was likely a bonus bi-product.
  • Egyptian word for cat is miaw. The word’s meaning  is indicated by the hieroglyph of a cat.
